Rats:
Some typical signs that your home is infested by rodents are; excitement of dogs or cats near particular areas of your walls, scratching or gnawing and / or skittering sounds within walls. Also, if you notice small pellets or popcorn-like droppings in packages of food gnawed open and chewed paper. Damaged, partially eaten oranges, avocados or other fruits. Signs of gnawing on plastic, wood or rubber materials. Rat droppings are usually signs of significant rat activity. Rat droppings are randomly scattered and will normally be found close to a rat runway feeding location or nearby shelter. They are dark in color, pellet shaped, and about 1/2 inch long.
Hazards:
Rats eat almost anything that humans eat. Rats transmit a variety of diseases, as many as 35. Diseases may be spread: by eating food contaminated by rodent droppings or urine, contact with rat urine, parasites which live on rodents and being bitten by a rodent.

Rats live only 12-18 months and reach sexual maturity at 2-3 months. They can reproduce as frequently as every 3 weeks bearing as many as 8-12 young each time. Matings from a single pair could reach as many as 15,000 in a year's time!

Rat's teeth are harder than iron and their jaws can exert pressures of 24,000 lb. per square inch. The gnawing of rats and mice destroys foundations, doors, molding, insulation, electric wires in attics, plumbing and sewer lines. They can chew into garbage cans, automobiles, priceless works of art and nearly anything else in and around your home or business.
